London DJ Jo Sinclair has been active in the city’s vibrant underground house scene for more than 20 years.
She developed an early interest in house music growing up in an era dominated by raves and her love of the genre developed listening to pirate stations such as Sunrise, Girls and Freak FM. She was later heavily influenced by shows such as Colin Dale's Abstract Dance and by DJs Paul Trouble Anderson, Patrick Forge, Norman Jay and Gilles Peterson - not to mention US artists such as Moodyman, Masters at Work, Blaze, and Kerri Chandler.
At the tender age of 19 she bought her first decks and started making mix tapes for friends and djing at house parties. Over the years she perfected her skills to create her own distinctive musical style which crosses the spectrum of deep and sexy US house, jackin’ Chicago house, Detroit techno, tech-house, nu-jazz and broken beats with a sprinkling of hip hop, soul and disco.
In 1998 Jo moved to Manchester to explore some creative opportunities and took her first step into a professional djing career presenting on a local radio station called Divergence with Rainy City records Irfan. During the same time she worked at promoting cutting edge music nights for the famous charity music venue Band on the Wall. Nights included luminaries such as Jazznova, Roni Size and Courtney Pine.
Having experimented with the Northern Music scene for a couple of years, Jo developed a yearning to get back to her home city roots. The move back to London kickstarted her own weekly residency at the Lane Bar which then led onto o a bi-monthly house night at the Rhythm Factory.
Progressing her name on the scene has included experience at: The Brick Lane Festival, The Sand Bar, Club Ortega, The Egg, Turnmills,Bobbi and Steve’s night at Herbal - alongside the legendary Paul Trouble Anderson - Back to 95 at Ministry of Sound with heavyweights such as Matt Jam Lamont and Karl Tuff Enuff Brown, Groove Odyssey with MAW headlining and the Brownswood FYE Festival led by Giles Peterson.
Jo also held her own weekly show on WorldDanceRadio for over a year and was recently headhunted for her own weekly show right here on HouseFM.net which she has held for over 4 years. In 2010 she was targeted by a German record label, to produce a compilation mix, which has now been released on WaveMusic.
Purveying a stylish and refined selection in music is the central ethos to Jo Sinclair. Still energised by the scene, her skill lies in displaying her musical dexterity at any occasion. With her DJ roots firmly established, her sights are now set firmly on continuing with djing for the future.
